12 December 2016. Bus to Siem Reap

I got the afternoon bus run by Mekong Express, having decided the boat option might prove too much of a good thing. Undoubtedly it would have been scenic but it is all in the context of a pretty crowded noisy boat doing its best to get the journey completed in the minimum time. The reports of lengthy delays with boat breakdowns also put me off. Maybe next time.

The bus journey was pleasant enough anyway. After the turn at Serei Saophoan to Siem Reap, it consisted largely of mile upon mile of paddy fields. In the seat next to me was a Dutchman on a six month break before starting his career. In front was a funny French couple who seemed to take exception to our conversation and rammed in their ear-plugs - the madness of couples.

The journey took 3.5 hours and on arrival the promised tuk tuk pick-up was nowhere to be seen. Cue for all the independents to offer their services. I was about to succumb when my guy turned up. A good job he did as the hotel proved to be somewhat off the beaten track.

In the evening I took advantage again of the free tuk tuk service and found a very pleasant spot for a delicious fish dish. However, the area around Pub Street is a bit of a zoo and I was happy to call the tuk tuk to take me back to the hotel.
